Wherever they occur you're free to incorporate them into combat. Mostly used for the citizens to get around in gondolas, the police and the Vox Populi have devices called skyhooks, used as a single person fast transit system around the city. Throughout Colombia there are fast transit systems called skyrails. Infinite does its best to break up the monotony of killing similar enemies in a couple of ways. New powers like Undertow, Return to Sender and a Murder of Crows are a blast to use and experiment with. The guns, on the other hand, feel almost completely lifted from Bioshock just with new skins, but this is almost a non-issue as you'll be trying to use your vigors as much as possible. The same combination of plasmid (now called vigors) on the left hand and gun on the right is almost the same, but the addition of new vigors changes it up at least. In terms of gameplay, Bioshock veterans will feel right at home. Obviously though, it all goes pear-shaped, but these moments of calm make the shock of what happens later even more potent. Still, you hear whisperings of the Vox Populi, the revolutionaries that seem to be operating behind the scenes and hushed mutterings of dissent. Children play in the streets, barbershop quartets float past on barges and the whole thing seems very pleasant. The sequence sets the scene perfectly as at first Columbia seems perfect. The first half an hour, depending on how much the player wants to explore, has no fighting but lets you explore the streets during a carnival. The same sense of hope and emerging industrial progress countered with an underlying unease that pervades the book is practically tangible in Columbia. Irrational's director Ken Levine has said the city was heavily influenced by "The Devil in the White City", a semi-fictionalised account of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. Columbia is one man's view of a the perfect 1912 city. Still, it does pick up again and from then on in ramps up the excitement until the conclusion.Īfter your rocket lands Booker wanders the streets trying to get his bearings. This isn't uncommon in gaming, but the rest of Infinite never relies on padding so it felt out of character. After the pitch perfect start, the game turns you around once you get to your goal and unceremoniously sends you out after something else. The only real misgiving I have is that the middle of the game lags when compared to the rest. Booker needs to find Elizabeth and escape but inevitably things get vastly more complicated than that. There is very little endless finding of macguffins which litter the landscape of modern gaming, for the most part, your goal is obvious, important and urgent. The plot is a tightly told adventure that flings you around the different burrows of Columbia on increasingly frantic missions to the darker side of the city. Irrational purposefully eschewed a multiplayer element to concentrate on the storyline. The sprawling city is laid out before you, an idyllic view as the sun rises over the monumental angel statue that presides over everything you can see.īioshock: Infinite is a story based game. As you soar into the sky and pass the cloud cover you're treated to your first view of Columbia. In deep with the wrong people, he needs to find girl named Elizabeth and bring her to New York unharmed. Booker has one directive, bring us the girl and wipe away the debt. Instead of sinking below the waves in a bathysphere, you're blasted into the sky on a rocket. Players of the previous games will recognise the intro sequence but the differences soon outweigh the similarities. You are Booker DeWitt, the classic grizzled war veteran, on your way to Columbia. To hope to cover all that makes Infinite so special would be a daunting task, but I'll start at the beginning. Not only is the city a fascinating character in itself, the actual characters, story and gameplay have all been lovingly improved upon to create not just a hugely satisfying experience that never rests on its laurels, but one of the best told stories of this generation of games.

The threads of Bioshock are still clearly visible though, but the new environment comes as a breath of fresh air after Rapture's recycled variety became somewhat stale in Bioshock 2. Though this is technically the third Bioshock game, developer Irrational Games have taken the wise move of creating a completely new story in a new city.
